The ecstasy of flamenco and Persian music

Top flamenco guitarist Dani de Morón meets Iranian setar player Kiya Tabassian in a fascinating string dialogue. Their musical journey weaves together the gentle melancholy of Persian music and the raw lamento of flamenco. In this new soundscape, flamenco singer Rosario La Tremendita reunites with Iranian singer Mohammad Motamedi, fourteen years after their first encounter at the Flamenco Biennial.

Poet Federico García Lorca described the duende – that elusive state of ecstasy in flamenco. In Persian music, this is known as hâl. At this crossroads, a vibrant concert is born: a fusion of energy, synergy, and a sense of adventure, dissolving all boundaries and placing pure expression front and centre. This is music that pours straight into the heart and soul.

Dani de Morón (1981), undoubtedly one of the best guitarists of his generation, born and raised in Morón de la Frontera, the southern hotspot for Spanish guitar, has a natural taste for the traditional alzapúa (the thumb swinging on the low strings). De Morón likes to explore new musical horizons and is therefore a welcome guest at the Flamenco Biennial.

Rosario Guerrero “La Tremendita” – The Warrior – lives up to her name. The singer with her soft, raw voice holds her own in the world of flamenco. Born in the gypsy district of Triana, Seville, and raised by her great-grandmother and father in the cante jondo, La Tremendita knows where and how to give the old songs just that little extra touch to make them hurt. El pellizco, the secret weapon of every good singer, comes naturally to her.

From De Moróns’ inimitable rhythm guitar, a breathtaking melody suddenly appeared – a marvel. It was as if another guitarist was hiding in the wings. A string performance that resonated long after.

De Volkskrant

The Qasida project, one of the highlights of the third Netherlands Biennale, pursued a vital dialogue of traditions, involving the melismatic vocal techniques of Rosario La Tremendita and Mohammad Motamedi from Iran.

Songlines

More flamenco than Rosario ‘La Tremendita’ is impossible. Her ‘cante puro’ is enchanting like a flash of light, and for a moment, she seems to make time stand still. La Tremendita makes the soul tremble.
