Árcángel & Ed Spanjaard / Nieuw Ensemble & Fuensanta ‘La Moneta’
Flamenco sin fin
This special co-production of the Nieuw Ensemble and the Dutch Flamenco Biennial shows how contemporary and worldly flamenco is. In this richly layered musical programme, flamenco, popular art par excellence, spreads its wings and soars into the present.
This show includes first performances of Fabio Nieder’s imaginative arrangement of De Falla’s famous Siete Canciones, the Black Star Suite of German composer Florian Magnus Maier and Muerte Sin Fin of Spanish composer Mauricio Sotelo, ‘scenic sketches’ based on the poem of the same title by Mexican poet José Gorostiza, which the Flamenco Biennial commissioned him to write for the Nieuw Ensemble.
Frangiz Ali-Zade has composed a piece for the Azerbaijani mugam singer Zabit Nabizade and the Nieuw Ensemble. Just as flamenco, mugam has its roots in intense expressive improvised singing of a highly personal nature.
Two leading flamenco soloists will take the stage: young rising star dancer Fuensanta ‘La Moneta’ and singer Arcángel, whose subtly expressive voice adapts beautifully to other kinds of music. The afternoon performance will show many unexpected aspects of flamenco.
