Dance as a cry for freedom

Five dancers move across the stage as if they were sharing one and the same soul. To a feverish cadence, they dance to the ultimate liberation. From collective trance to harmony, in a fearless duet with life.

Chorographer/dancer David Coria (b. Sevilla, 1983) drew inspiration for his latest group work from moments of spontaneous dance rebellion, where dancing crowds threw their body into the battle to ward off pain and oppression. ‘Los Bailes Robados’ (Stolen Dances) is contemporary flamenco as a life-giving cry for freedom.

For this performance, his Dutch debut, Coria assembles a star cast. With flamenco singer David Lagos, saxophonist Juan M. Jiménez, Isidora O'Ryan (vocals and cello) and dancer Florencia Oz – no strangers to the Flamenco Biennale – he takes a new step in his oeuvre. Coria’s innovative dance language, in combination with his social and political engagement, make ‘Los Bailes Robados’ one of today’s most exciting flamenco performances. For this he was awarded the Spanish stage prize Premio Talía 2024 for best male dancer.

Strasbourg, 1518: for no apparent reason, a woman begins to dance. She dances day and night, and more and more people join her. They dance, incessantly and in a trance, to the limit, until death.

These kinds of moments of spontaneous ‘dance hysteria’ through history were a source of inspiration for David Coria’s latest work. “With their dance rebellion, these dancers express what they cannot articulate in words. Dancing, they demand a place to be themselves.” In ‘Los Bailes Robados’, Coria wants to give a voice to all those who, still today, are marginalised: the witch, the lunatic, the misunderstood, the dissident. "If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution.” - Emma Goldman.

Dancer and choreographer David Coria is at the cutting edge of contemporary flamenco. He has danced as a soloist with the Flamenco Ballet of Andalusia as well as with innovative dance makers such as Aída Gómez, Eva Yerbabuena, and Rocío Molina. His own work is reminiscent of Pina Bausch and is strongly influenced by Antonio Gades, a flamenco great with whom he has frequently worked.

Los bailes robados is like a magical ceremony that harks back to the origins of dance, transporting us to moments of collective enchantment.
