Fernanda y Bernarda
Inseparable flamenco sisters
Fernanda, with her soul-stirring soleá, and Bernarda, renowned for her powerful bulería: these inseparable sisters were two of the most remarkable flamenco cantaoras in history, unmatched artists of the deepest gypsy music.
This documentary embarks on a journey from Utrera to Madrid (delving into the emotional turmoil this move brought to their family), and from there to the 1964 World’s Fair in New York and the grand musical stages of Paris. It compellingly argues why it’s entirely fitting to regard them as the ‘Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday of Andalusia.’ Even the maestro Camarón attested that in a flamenco jam session, they were simply unparalleled.
