Israel Galván
The Making of Le Sacre/Consagración de la Primavera
Flamenco Biënnale 2021 reportage
This reportage follows flamenco innovator Israel Galván during the making process of ‘La Consagración de la Primavera’, the performance staged during the live edition of the Flamenco Biennial 2021.
In Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ in Amsterdam, Galván, the ‘enfant terrible’ of the flamenco, presented a thrilling, percussive performance of Stravinsky’s masterpiece ‘The Rite of Spring’ together with pianists Daria van den Bercken and Gerard Bouwhuis.
This short documentary charts the creation of the piece: from the artists’ first meeting, to the rehearsals, to the performance itself. Galván – who is himself often described as the Nijinsky of the flamenco – talks about how he shaped his version of the ‘Rite’ in the footsteps of the legendary Russian dancer Vaslav Nijinsky (1889-1950). How he translated the movement language of Vicente Escudero (1892 -1980) in his body. Galván also offers a first look at his new performance ‘Seises’: ‘Flamenco is a hair problem,’ he says.
